Community Events
Waitangi ki Manukau
MUMA is a proud co-sponsor of the Manukau ki Waitangi Event alongside the Auckland Council. Bringing our vibrant South Auckland community together to celebrate the Treaty of Waitangi is a pleasure each year as we look to serve the specific history of Manukau in our country's founding document. Unfortunately due to Covid 19 we were unable to hold this event in 2021, but planning is already underway for 2022 and we are confident that we can assemble the best line up yet!
Portage Crossing
Our working relationships with Mana Whenua are bound by whakapapa, whānaungatanga and hononga.
Each year MUMA hosts the annual Portage Crossing waka Ama event which celebrates the Tainui crossing with Mana Whenua. This event takes paddlers along the ancient Tainuiwaka route into Tamaki Makaurau. Ngāti Whātua ki Orākei prepare the paddlers for the crossing, and Tainui receive the paddlers at the end of the journey. Kaumatua from both Iwi ensure tikanga is upheld and all of Auckland are welcome to celebrate in our unique history on this day.
Foodbank Christmas
With our partners Auckland City Mission we hold annual Foodbank Christmas events at Ngā Whare Waatea Marae to contribute to our whānau in need during the Christmas period. We provide those who are struggling with parcels that include kai, presents for the tamariki, and additional WINZ support where necessary. In 2020 our usual open gate policy for pick-ups was adjusted to appointment based in order to accommodate Covid safety restrictions.
