Promoting The Māori World

Auckland’s only Māori radio station

Radio Waatea 603am provides a range of programmes 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, enjoying a fiercely loyal listenership from Māori and non-Māori audiences.

It was set up by UMA Broadcasting Ltd, which was established in 1999 as a joint venture between MUMA and Te Whanau a Waipareira Charitable Trust, to seek and develop opportunities for urban Māori in broadcasting.

Our radio station meets the needs of everyone, broadcasting in both English and Te Reo Māori. You can tune in any time to hear Māori and English language news and current affairs, talk radio as well as an eclectic mix of contemporary and ‘old school’ music.

Under the Waatea News banner, we also deliver the National Māori Language News and Current Affairs service to the iwi radio network, a collective of 21 independent iwi stations across the country.

Our main imperative is to foster positive attitudes towards, and accurate beliefs about the Māori language and living culture, so that Māori-English bilingualism becomes a valued part of New Zealand society.”
